Mbole people emigrated from northern Congo river, crossing upstream of the river mouth near Lomani Basoco , before moving south to its present location. In the eighteenth century, they were divided into five smaller villages as a result of pressureBombesa advance . They share their cultural and linguistic heritage with Mongo , whom live west , and from whom they were separated during Lokele and Topoke and invasions.
A distinctive element recognized around the world are their copper currencies , large bracelets, also known as slave bracelets . Made of copper or bronze, they circulated and were used for generations.
They were collected and by governments in West and Central Africa in 1948-49 and replaced by paper money. In any case, people were allowed to keep 200 pieces of this original family . In fact , in some remote regions of the Rep . Dem . Congo ( ex – Zaire) , it is rumored that these coins are still in use . It was, logically, more value , the larger the piece. Not used in routine operations, Mbole currency was used as a way to store wealth easily transportable by African peoples , at weddings and funerals. Also, these heavy pieces were molded on the body of any person, who thus could show the great amount of wealth he possessed.
